The first nationwide, cross-sectional, online survey of head lice infestation was conducted. A questionnaire was developed by a private research company through consultation with Dan Healthcare Company Ltd. The target population was randomly selected from the research company's database. The survey was available online over a five-day period in December, 2007, to persons that had consented to participate. Of 550,000 registered households, 120,000 were randomly selected and consent was obtained from 57,100. Of these 57,100 households, 1,334 (2.34%) had experienced lice infestations within the previous two year. Of these 1,334 households, 296 were randomly selected and valid data were obtained from 205 households. Of these 205 households, 172 (83.9%) reported lice infestation within the previous one year and 148 (72.2%) reported head lice infestations. The annual household head lice infestation rate was 1.68%, the household incidence of head lice infestation was estimated at 830,000 households/year. Of 148 households with head lice infestations, 141 (95.3%) included members under 20 years of age and 88 (59.5%) reported more than two cases of infestation. Phenothrin was used for control of head lice by 117 (79.1%) households. Of these 117,10 (8.5%) reported that the head lice were not eliminated by treatments.
