Abstract
This trial was conducted to elucidate the influence of the quantity to take yogurt containing Bifidobacterium lactis strain BB-12 (BB-12) at 4×107 cfu/g (BB-12 yogurt) against the effect to improve the defecation and fecal microflora.
Fifteen Japanese healthy adults (average age 39.8 years) were divided into two groups either BB-12 yogurt 80 g/day or 150 g/day, and was administered for 14 days.
Increase of quantity of feces was observed on the 150 g group. The improvement of the fecal microflora, and decrease of fecal ammonia were observed on both 80 g and 150 g groups. These results suggest that the BB-12 yogurt has an efficacy to improve the defecation, fecal microflora, and fecal environment depending on intake quantity between 80 g to 150 g a day.
The trial to take BB-12 yogurt 450 g/day for 14 days was conducted to elucidate the safety when take a superfluous quantity of BB-12 yogurt. There were no abnormal observations on trial period, and the safety was considered to be confirmed.
