Rickardite was synthesized by the dry method. It is orthorhombic with cell dimensions a=4.0032±0.0014, b=19.893±0.007 and c=12.220±0.004Å at room temperature and composition Cu1.45Te. The solid solution range extends from Cu1.41Te to Cu1.45Te at 200°C.
The thermal expansion and transition of synthetic rickardite were investigated by means of X-ray powder heating method and D. T. A.. The transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal on heating takes place at 170°C for Cu1.41Te and 180°C for Cu1.45Te.
