Abstract
The effect of the application of Agaricus blazei spent compost (ASC) on the cultivation of eggplant (Chikuyo) was investigated. The basic material of the compost forA. blazei cultivation primarily consisted of the top shoot of sugar cane (stems and leaves). Adverse effects of ASC on the chemical properties of the soil did not occur, and the excessive accumulation of phosphoric acid and potassium was improved. The dry weight of the eggplant root was remarkably increased by ASC application, and an increase in the fruit yield was observed. As for the characteristics of the fruit of the eggplant, the gross weight of minerals and amino acids was increased. The physiological state of the tree was good during the cultivation of eggplant with ASC, and the yield of eggplant was increased by about 30% due to the prolongation of the harvest period. From these results, it is suggested that ASC could be used for agriculture without the necessary composting process which is required when using the spent substrate of wood rotting mushrooms. It is also perceived that the application of ASC in soil may improve both the productivity and quality of eggplant.
