Train stations are traditionally hubs where people and cargo congregate. However, following changes to the local structure of certain regions, villages and communities around the periphery of train stations have disappeared, and there are now many train stations in Hokkaido which are totally unused.

Recently, efforts have begun to revitalize the area and attract tourists, focusing on areas that are likely to be abandoned and treating them as a “regional resource”.

In this paper, we discuss three such cases in Hokkaido and share our observations on what effects these activities can have on a local region, as well as potential issues therein.
