Abstract
In 1932 F. S. Granger wrote in his article that “Phenol is theoretically capable of forming two monoalcohols, two dialcohols, and one trialcohol. Of these only the mono-alcohols are known”. Since the discovery of mono-alcohols by Lederer and Manasse (1894), sixty long years passed till the two-dialcohols and trialcohol are all separated from the alkaliresol and then synthesised. In the present article, first the pioneering but unsuccessful works of Granger, K. H. Meyer (1936) and H. Stäger-J. Biert (1938) are mentioned and the successful works of G. R. Sprengling-J. H. Freeman (1950), Freeman and J. Reese (1952) are introduced and discussed, especially on the melting points of phenolalcohols.
