Abstract
During 1951 and 1959 G. Zigeuner and co-workers published eighteen articles on “Degradation of Urea-formaldehyde resins” for Monatshefte fur Chemie. In the present article about half of their works i. e. Part I-VII, IX, X and XII are introduced. Zigeuner reacted 2, 4-dimethylphenol with the resins in formic acid or alcohol hydrochloric acid mixture and obtained oxybenzylureas as degradation products. By means of the type of the oxybenzylureas he suggested the structure of the resins and it is worthy of special mention that he confirmed the dimethylene ether structure in it. In the last section the present author discussed about the characteristic nature of melting points of the oxybenzylureas, referring the articles of H. v. Euler, Nyström (1941) and S. Tsuruta, K. Takano (1948).
