This paper attempts to analyze regional linkage system in terms of air-passenger flows and to consider the role of the air traffic from a geographical perspective; in other words attempts are made to survey the development process and some of the regional patterns of the air traffic and to investigate their factors.
Air transportation networks in Japan are densely extended either from Tokyo or Osaka as a center. There are more air-passenger flows for the districts of Kyushu than for Tohoku and Chugoku.
The number of air-passengers departed from each city is, for the most part, proportional to population scale of the cities connected with that city by airroute.
The share of the air-passengers to the passengers of all mode transportation increases, as the distance increases. In general, the share is less than 25% if the time distance is less than 5 hours, while the time distance increases from 5 to 10 hours, it ranges from 25% to 75%. When the time distance is more than 10 hours, it exceeds 75% of the total share.
