Hollow biodegradable microcapsules are expected to become an integral part in medical application and pharmaceutics as drug delivery systems or as ultrasound contrast agents. We employed the bubble template method to synthesize hollow biodegradable polymeric microcapsules. This method relies on the stabilization of microbubbles in a solution via the direct polymer adsorption onto the microbubble surface. In this study, we employed polylactic acid and elucidated the conditions required to synthesize uniform capsules. We focused on the effects of initial PLA concentration, PLA molecular weight, and PVA in a surrounding aqueous medium. By optimizing these parameters, the uniform hollow PLA microcapsules could be obtained. In addition, it was found that the release mechanism of bubbles and the solidification process of PLA shell could be classified in either one of the following two mechanisms: solvent evaporation and bubble eruption.
