One of the main aims of Marcel Mauss who wrote The Gift can be said to maintain and revive the old principle of gift in his contemporary society. This principle consists of three mottos: give, receive and return. It served as a kind of social stabilizer which kept the parity among members of the society. Emerging capitalist ecoomy, however, was driving it out of the society and replacing it with moral of merchants. This trend was a significant momentum that destabilized society by undermining people’s lives. The priciple of gift was proposed by Mauss as a basic idea preventing society from collapsing accelerated by developing ecoomic imparity. There should be some close consideration if the old principle of gift is to be applied to the modern society which has got rid of the “bothering” factors related to exchaging gifts but this principle shall find any opportuities to be revived in this era of internet that gives priority to sharing and exchanging informations and thoughts rather than possessing them in one’s hand.
