A water-soluble conducting complex of polyaniline/Poly (4-styrenesulfonate) (PANI/SPS) was synthesized using a template-guided enzymatic approach. The polymerization of aniline was carried out in an aqueous buffer at pH 4.3 using the enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as the biocatalyst in the presence of a SPS polyanion template. This template-guided enzymatic reaction is an unique approach for the controllable polymerization of aniline to the electroactive form under milder and environmentally compatible condition. An electrochromic device was prepared using PANI/SPS, polyelectrolyte, lithium salt and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass. The electrochromizm, reversible color change (green, blue, purple) of this device, was exhibited when about 2.5 V was applied between two ITO glasses. The degree of color change in this device was dependent on the voltage and lithium salt contents, and the rate of the color change was also effected by these condition and the period during which the voltage was applied.
