In the context of its widespread global usage, screen printing is generally regarded as having been developed and modernized in Europe and the United States based on Japanese textile printing techniques that employed stencils. This article provides an overview of the history of kata-zome (stencil dyeing), which has supported Japanese dyeing culture, and describes the role of stencils in kata-yuzen as well as in the modern stencil engraving process. Furthermore, in response to difficulties sustaining stencil supply due to the declining number of skilled craftspeople, particularly as existing ones age, this article describes an alternative technology based on mechanical engraving, which was developed and demonstrated primarily by the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture.
