Photosensitive polymers of Polyisopropenyl paramethoxy styryl ketone (PIMSK) and Polyfurfurylidene isopropenyl ketone (PFIK) were prepared from isopropenyl paramethoxy styryl ketone (IMSK) and furfurylidene isopropenyl ketone (FIK) by anionic polymerization, respectively.
The ultraviolet spectra of the polymers showed at 325nm of λmax (εmax=17900) for PIMSK, and at 317nm (εmax=18500) for PFIK.
The polymers obtained were readily soluble in organic solvents such as benzene and dioxane, but they became insoluble in these solvents by irradiation with ultraviolet light.
Photochemical reaction kinetics of the polymers were represented by second order in the initial stage of the reaction.
The rate constants are 2.90×102cm2/mol.sec for PIMSK and 4.25×102cm2/mol.sec for PFIK, respectively.
The quantum yields (φ0) in the initial stages of the photodimerization reactions were 1.22 at the initial concentration of 5.891×10-7mol/cm2 of PIMSK and 1.54 in 6.273×10-7mol/cm2 of PFIK.
From the experiments with the triplet state sensitizer, it was found that the triplet energy transfer was closely related to the dimerization of PIMSK and PFIK.
