Intaglio printing plates are electroplated with chromium to increase their durability. But it is not sufficient for new materials which are recently used for intaglio ink, wiping roller and so on. As a result of the preliminary study of this project, ion plating, one of the physical vapor depositions (PVD) seemed to be a better method to increase the durability of the plates. Nickel-electroformed plates coated with TiN were used for the on-press tests. However, many scratches and dents were formed on the surface when the deposited layer was comparatively thin. It was because that the surface composition of the Ni plates changed by the heating in the ion plating process and the hardness of them reduced by half. We tested many kinds of materials and found Ni alloy (Ni-P, Ni-Fe, Ni-Co) electroformed plates were appropriate substrates for ion plating.
