In the graphic arts industry, the “workflow” is gradually becoming a remarkable word today. The recent work of the graphic arts is almost changed to utilize digital networked systems. In order to use these systems efficiently, we have to establish the optimized workflow. On the other hand, several workflow management systems which control and automate digital networked systems have been released. It is suggested that the systems will be widely used. As the first step, this paper describes the basic concept of workflow and workflow management, and defines essential functions for workflow management systems. Next, the outline of a typical example for the workflow management systems named DNP FLOW is introduced. Furthermore, it gives the description about the necessity and trend of standardization (WfMC, CIP 3, AMPAC, SWAP) related to workflow management. Last of all, overview in the future is described for the integrated business and production system with workflow management.
