The theme of this chronicle, as stated in the preface, is a comparison of the workings of Buddha's Law in the family history of the Minamoto's with that in the Jokyu Rebellion. The unfolding of the Law seems dubious in the case of the former, As the third generation approaches its end; how should it be assessed in the case of the latter, constituting a matchless page in the history of imperial insurrection? In the Jokyu Rebellion itself, ex-Emperor Gotoba, as a result of having neglected not only Buddha's Law but the gods and heaven as well, is defeated by his subjects and sent to exile. In other words, the law of cause and effect, Buddhism's most fundamental principle, is fulfilled. That this text recounts the history of this rebellion in this fashion shows that it viewed this outcome favorably. In contrast to other texts of this work, the Jiko-ji text demonstrates a sure grasp of history.
