During the so-called age of dark valley, Muku Hatoju presented "Taro-Guma in the Mountain" followed by the fifteen other animal stories in the "Shonen-Kurabu". I discuss the significance of his animal stories in the history of modern juvenile literature. And I also attempt to explain the several characteristics of his works in relation to the natural environment of Shinshu where he was born and brought up, and to his own honest personality.
