Hitomaro composed five tankas (Vol.1, 45-49), when he accompanied Prince Karu on his excursion to Akino. These tankas describe his memories of his deceased father, Prince Hinamishi. This excusion is presumed to have been arranged by the Empress Jito for the purpose of performing memorial rites in honor of the royal ancestors. The memorial rites are also considered to have had some connection with the Imperial Throne and the royal rights. These rituals may have been established during the reign of Emperor Tenmu, and influenced by China. I've discussed the Poems of Akino in connection with the ritual of the royal rights.
