A pre-symposium on this topic was held ahead of the 73rd Folklore Society of Japan Annual Meeting which took place at Kanagawa University in 2021. Yokohama developed as an international port city during Japanʼs modernization process. Its Chinatown also grew with the city, while the development of the Keihin Industrial Zone also attracted many migrants from all over Japan. Studying the life of Chinese residents in Japan and Okinawans in Tsurumi from Yokohama, a city that perfectly embodies great diversity, reveals how they manifest their culture in daily life while adapting to the local culture. On the other hand, Japanese festivals held by Japanese immigrants living in Sao Paulo, Brazil illustrate the globalization of culture. How immigrants manifest their own culture is examined from the perspective of the folklore of border crossing and contact.
