Abstract
Objective and Methods About 11 million persons receive ningen dock or medical examinations at our health promotion center in a year. For the purpose of improving medical safety management in our center, we investigated incident-accident reports from our center over the last 3 years. Also we worked on the decrease of medical risks. Results Eighteen reports were presented. Eight reports concerned omissions or misses of examined data during the writing of reports of medical examinations. Four concerned process misorders and four concerned complaints of overlong time. Two examinees had minor incidents, but recovered within several hours. Our review of the reports pointed out our lack of explanation to examinees about the risks of receiving medical examinations, and also the problem that examinees are unprepared. We worked on the checking of charts on the previous day to medical examinations with a mind to safely risks. Also to reduce deficits, misses and disorders, we revised the check lists. From December in 2003, to improve the safety of receiving medical examinations, we mailed the questionnaire titled “Advice on how to receive medical examinations safely”. Examinees filled it out at home before the appointed day to increase their awareness of the risk. Before the examination on the appointed day, we also certified it. It is important for medical staff to communicate with examinees and to be given informed consent. Conclusions Preventive medicine usually is initiated by examinees. They have to consider both the significance and the risk of every medical examination. We must explain both these adequately to meet their wishes. This could result in not only improred medical safety management but also satisfaction of examinees and a higher quality of medical examinations.
