Abstract
Objective: Several studies have reported an association between the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Inflammatory process has been also known to be involved in cardiovascular events. The present study aimed to determine if the metabolic syndrome is affected by an inflammatory marker, high sensitivity c-reactive protein (hs-CRP). Methods: The subjects with clustering disorders, such as obesity, hypertension, elevated glucose, increased triglyceride and low high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were recruited from 2043 participants based on increased BMI (>25)in the health examination. Mean hs-CRP was 0.53mg/L in the subjects with obesity alone and this was significantly elevated compared with the subject with no disorder (0.23mg/L). Mean hs-CRP increased gradually with the increasing numbers of disorders. Seven subjects with previous cardiovascular events indicated elevated hs-CRP,4 among whom found more than 2 disorders. Conclusions: It is concluded that metabolic syndrome is influenced to increase hs-CRP level with numbers of disorders.
