Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is a recently recognized disorder that produced characteristic clinical and radiographic abnormalities involving the sternum, clavicles, upper ribs and spine.
We have experienced 13 cases of sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis complained of pain, swelling in the upper portion of the chest.
Pustulosis palmaris and plantaris were associated in 9 cases, but no patient has abnormal X-ray findings of the spine in the radiographs. No specific finding was observed in the laboratory examinations but staphylococcus epidermidis was detected at the lesion in one case.
Radiographs revealed the proliferative osseous changes around the sternoclavicular joints and upper part of the sternum.
A radionuclide study with technetium methylen diphosphonate (Tc-MDP) showed the abnormal accumulation about the involved skeletal structures.
Histological examination revealed nonspecific chronic inflamation of bone and enthesis with fiurosis mild infiltrations of round cells and new bone formation.
