When one sees some aging changes of bones and joints on a x-ray film, it is difficult to determine whether it is physiological or pathological. Therefore, the authors have been attempting to gain a more complete knowledge concerning “physiological” aging of bones and joints in the general population by examining x-ray films of intact extremities in our outpatients who suffered from trauma.
Each bone and joint was evaluated concerning four items, that is osteoporosis, narrowing of joint space, subchondral bone sclerosis and osteophyte formation, and rated as follows: O; no change, 1; some changes, and 2; prominent changes.
We have examined x-ray films on 389 patients.
In the upper extremity, osteoporotic changes were in the majority, and sclerosis and osteophyte were found frequently in the lower extremity.
In future, more and more cases should be examined and summed up.
