Thirty-six patients with thoracolumbar fractures and complete paraplegia were studied: all patients were treated by combined anterior and posterior approach with double Harrington distraction rods within two weeks of injuries. Harrington instrumentation by square ended rods with segmental spinous process wiring resulted in an earlier rehabilitation which considerably decreased the immobilization and hospitalization time, which were of great psychological importance for the patients.
