The question of material is central to all considerations on the development of a cementless skeletal implant system that has a long-term stalility. However, it would be presumptuous to assume that lifeless matter can mimic perfectly function and skeletal properties of living bone-especially when the selection is limited to single materials. So we are trying to make a new orthopaedic material which is not brittle but has a good biocompatibility, and non-corrosiveness. The α-Al2O3, γ-Al2O3, TiN, HAP ceramics were chosen to coat stainless steel. These materials were inserted in the femurs of adult dogs, The results showed that the stainless steel screws coated with α-Al2O3 and ones with HAP had a excellent biocompatibility.
