The pathology of rupture of lateral ligaments of the ankle joint was investigated with stress X-rays, arthograms and operative findings in 21 cases.
The anterior drawer distances did not differ both in cases with rupture of the anterior talo-fibular ligament only and in cases combined with rupture of the calcaneo-fibular ligament. In the former cases, the tilt angle of the talus in stress X-rays was 16.2 degrees on an average, being 24.8 degrees in the latter. The peroneal tendon in arthrogram was revealed in 30.8% in the former, being 87.5% in the latter.
The rupture of lateral ligament of the ankle was considered to occur initially in the anterior talo-fibular ligament followed by the rupture of capsule and finally of the calcaneo-fibular ligament.
