The technique for ultrasound imaging of the rotator cuff and infant hip is described and the normal anatomy of the region is illustrated. Ultrasonography of the shoulder and infant hip appears to easily and rapidly display normal anatomy.
In each case both shoulders and hips were scanned so that symmetry could be assessed.
Results: 1. The sonographic criteria indicative of rotator cuff tear were, (1) nonvisualization of the cuff; (2) discontinuity in the normal homogenious echogenicity of the rotator cuff; and (3) no distinction between deltoid and rotator cuff.
2. The sonographic evaluation of congenital dislocation of the hip includes (1) whether femoral head completely covered by the acetabular roof or not; and (2) the distance between the femoral head and medial acetabular roof.
