Seven comminuted fractures of the femoral shaft in seven patients were followed after treatment with the Brooker-Wills distal locking intramedullary nail. Three of the fractures were open and four were closed. All fractures united in a mean time of 59 days. Shortening of more than 2 centimeters occurred in one patient. No patient required postoperative traction or external stabilization, and all patients regained normal range of motion of the ipsilateral knee. There were postoperative complications in two patients with heterotopic bone at the site of the insertion of the nail. No problems were encountered with removal of the nail.
