Sternal fractures without external injury are exceedingly rare.
A 79-yr-old woman has been troubled with ‘asthma’ which she appeared to be wheezing and having a cough since her mid fifties.
A bulging of the center part to the sternum was noted without external injury on arising the morning on January 18, 1989.
An X-ray film showed a sternal fracture and blood chemistry results did not indicate a malignant tumor.
We suggested that weakness of the sternum by osteoporosis, the transmission of forces to the sternum by compression vertebral fracture and chronic pressure to the thorax with ‘asthma’ were important factors in the onset of a non-traumatic sternal fracture.
