In order to determine indication of operation for lumbar disc herniation, comparision of the results of surgical therapy with those of non-surgical therapy was made 4 years after the hospital stay. In non-surgical group, the subjects with similar situation to surgical group were selected to obtain more reliable data.
There was no significant difference in symptom and sign between both groups after 4 years. However, half of the patients in non-surgical group was unsatisfactory with results, whereas 80% of the patients was satisfactory in surgical group.
The findings of this study may help to select patients for surgical therapy of lumbar disc herniation.
