We evaluated 12 patients with Monteggia fractures treated at the University of Occupational and Environmental Health, between 1979 to 1996.
Nine of the 12 cases had missed and malunited Monteggia fractures, with dislocated radial heads.
We were able to reduce the dislocated radial heads more easily in the three newer cases compared to those cases with old injuries. In regard to the older cases, good results were achieved in those treated by ulna osteotomy with over-correction of the angular deformity and elongation of the bone. Reconstruction of the annular ligament alone was not sufficient for optimal heatment.
