We experienced two cases of severe deformity after septic arthritis of the knee. Case 1 was a 52-year-old man diagnosed with septic arthritis of the knee in June, 1998. MSSA was cultured from knee fluid, and drainage and antibiotics therapy were performed nonetheless, six months later varus deformity progressed gradually, and bone defects of the femoral condyle and medial lesion of the tibia were found on radiograph and MRI. Knee arthrodesis was performed in June 1999. 16 months after operation, pain in the knee joint disappeared.
Case 2 was a 58-year-old woman who developed coagraze negative staphylococcus infection of the right knee. Arthroscopic and antibiotic therapy were performed, but the right knee joint deteriorated gradually.. We performed TKA treatment using antibiotic-impregnated cement beads in April 2000. Seven months after operation, the range of motion of the right knee was 90 degrees.
TKA performance should be evaluated based on laboratory date, and the results of histopathological examination and knee aspiration culture.
