As one of the methods to utilize chitin, meso tartaric acid was prepared from glucosam -in-HCl by oxidation with nitric acid. Under bestcondition, about 218g of meso tartaric acid, 22g of racemic tartaric acid and 7.6g of oxalic acid were obtained from 500g of glucosamm-HCl.
