Using registration data, this study analyzes the agricultural structure and inheritance of productive green land in suburban areas. We take Machida City, Tokyo, as our research area as this region has the most abundant productive green land, after Hachioji City. The result shows that the number of farmers declines with age. Hence, it is crucial to appoint a successor to maintain the farmland. However, despite the presence of a successor, the proportion of farmers has been declining, especially in large landholdings with a large group of farmers. While there has been progress in the inheritance of productive green land, almost half the farmlands have not been registered for inheritance. This finding shows that, although necessary measures have been implemented for the extension of farmlands, the maintenance and succession of abandoned farmlands remain unaddressed problems.
