Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the current status and issues of a corporation other than “a corporation qualified to own cropland.” To answer this question, this study used the data from the complete survey of Saitama Prefecture and Shimane Prefecture. The following results were obtained: (1) the share of leased cropland is only a few percent; (2) the mean value of leased cropland area is similar to or larger than that owned by the surrounding farmers; (3) a higher percentage of the corporations that withdrew from farming leased idle cropland than those that did not. While these findings indicate the importance of a corporation other than “a corporation qualified to own cropland” as tenants of farmland, they also suggest problems as a policy for idle farmland.
