Abstract
It is known that chronic inflammation and hypertrophy of the lingual tonsil causes anabnormal feeling of the pharynx and other symptoms in human adults. However, clinicalobservations of lingual tonsil are but few in number in the literatures. The present authorhas carried out a clinical observation on the lingual tonsil in 1012 patients and obtained thefollowing results.
1) Hypertrophy of the lingual tonsil always demonstrates an upheval from the surfaceof the lingual mucosa, and a submerged hypertrophy as in palatine tonsil if neverfound.
2) Hypertrophy is found in 27.1% of the cases examined, and this condition is morefrequently encountered in males than in females. Hypertrophy has a tendency ofincreasing after adolescence.
3) Hypertrophy occurs earlier in females than in males. This is considered to be due tosome influence of the endocrine glands.
4) The lingual basis comes in contact with the epiglottis not only in hypertrphic onditions of the lingual tonsil.
