Abstract
Air sickness can be a serious problem for aircraft crews under training. It is an important problem which must be solved not only for the crews themselves but also from the standpoint of aerial navigation safety. To solve this problem, air forces of various countries desensitize trainees by exposing them to Coriolis acceleration and biofeedback therapy, and they report a curing rate (rehabilitation rate) of 70-84%. However, because these methods require special devices and arduous acceleration training, a programwas developed that is designed to overcome air sickness having the trainee perform certain activities during daily life. This program mainly employs physical stretching exercises, swimming, experience of changes in acceleration, etc.;at the same time, drugs with actions of controlling the autonomic nerve function and antihistaminergic agents are also used if deemed necessary.During the five-year period from 1987 to 1992, eleven aircraft crews were trained using this program to treat air sickness.A rehabilitation rate of 81.8% was obtained. Thus, this program was concluded to be an effective approach to treatment of air sickness.
