For 2, 4 or 10 weeks after obliterating the unilateral endolymphatic sac of guinea pigs by Kimura's method, the vestibular functions were observed by the trapezoid rotation test using Contraves' computerized rotary chair system.
All of 7 subjects showing the endolymphatic hydrops histologically revealed directional preponderance (DP) to the operated ear side. “DP” was most remarkable two weeks after the operation and decreased gradually until it disappeared ten weeks after the operation. On the other hand, 2 subjects showing non-hydrops histologically did not revealed “DP”.
The results suggested that “DP to the operated ear side” detected by the rotation test two weeks after the operation could be an indication to know the presence of endolymphatic hydrops postoperatively
