Short-term adaptation in single cochlear nucleus neurons of anesthetized cats was studied. After the characteristic frequency, the threshold and value of Q10 of each neuron was determined, neural responses were obtained under a short-term conditioning stimulus that the frequency of the masking and probe tone were the characteristic frequency of the neuron and its duration was 10-200ms and the time interval between masker offset and probe tone onset were 10-640ms. The decrement produced by adaptation to the masker obtained from pauser type neurons showed to be nonmonotonic time course and PST histogram patterns were also changed into sustained type.
