The lateral margin of the tectorial membrane (TM) and the marginal pillar (MP) of postnatal golden hamsters were studied by transmission electron microscopy.
The components of the MP were secreted by the third row of Diters' cells from the 3rd day after birth. The MP appeared on the 7th day, and attached itself to the lower surface of the marginal net. The lateral margin of the TM was supported by the MP till the TM matured. The MP began to disappear on the 16th day. On the 18th day, the MP had completely disappeared and the formation of the organ of Corti was almost completed at this time.
