By scanning electron microscope, we discovered an inner ear anomaly in golden hamsters (Fujita et al. 1987). In this study, we examined the level of the anomaly of OHC1, by transmission electron microscope and the period of onset of the anomaly. TEM showed that the cuticles of OHC1 were dislocated, but in the lower portions, dislocation due to this mutation was not apparent. This mutation of the inner ear was already present in the basal turn at four days after birth. The kinocilium was located outside of the streocilia in OHC1 but the sensory hairs were scattered about in every direction in the same manner as in adult animals.
