Abstract
When the powder mixtures of Zr/B/C and Al/B/C were mechanically activated by grinding in a planetary ball mill and exposed to air, they ignited spontaneously and the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) took place to form ZrB2-ZrC and Al3BC-Al4C3, respectively.
