In this study, the degradation of estrogens in water by TiO2 photocatalysis was investigated. As a reprensentative estrogenic substances, 17β-estradiol (E2) began to be degraded by photocatalytic reaction. The analysis of GS/MS and theoretical calculation showed that E2 was degraded first around the third carbon atom, and gave out CO2 from the intermediate products. Then further in practical use, we applied the TiO2-fixed PTFE sheet for the treatment of the water in final sedimentation tank of the sewage works. As a result, it is confirmed by RIA and recombinant yeast cell estrogen screening assay that the concentration of estrogenic substances in the treated water to 1/10. Also while comparing a killifish growth, vitellogenin density was inhibited greatly after the treatment of photocatalysis. These results suggest that TiO2 photocatalytic reaction could be applied to effectively remove steroid group substance from the swage water.
