Removal of toxic gases such as carbon tetrachloride, chloropicrin and dimethyl methyl phosphonate (DMMP) vapor were investigated on activated carbon fibers, and compare the removal efficiency to metal impregnated activated carbon and activated carbon deposited cloths at various conditions. The vapors evaporated by air bubbling were passed through the carboneous adsorbent packed column at constant flow rate. The vapor concentration in influent and effluent air was measured by gas chromatography. The adsorption amount of DMMP on activated carbon fiber was 0.585g/g-ACF, which was 7.4 times larger than that of metal-impregnated activated carbon at the break point(0.004mg/l).The adsorption amounts of carbon tetrachloride and chloropicrin on ACF were 7.7 and 18 times larger than that of metal-impregnated activated carbon at the break point. Activated carbon fiber can be used as a proper adsorbent for the removal of air contaminants, especially toxic gases.
