The influence of fiber-matrix interface and the density of the materials on the mechanical behavior of 2-D carbon-carbon composites fabricated by CVI process have been analyzed. The fracture behavior of the material was tested by three-point flexural method, and the fractograph and interface of the composites were observed by SEM technique. The results show that the fracture modes of 2-D carbon-carbon composites are changed from shearing and delaminating failure to tensile failure with increasing densification degrees. The density has a very large influence on the strength and modulus, but not on the flexural deflection. In fact, the key factors for the flexural deflection of 2-D carbon-carbon composites are the performance of pyrocarbon and the interfacial bonding between fibers and matrix.
