The authors have previously reported to prepare fibrous zirconia by drying a monodispersed zirconia suspension. The monodispersed zirconia particles were prepared by hydrolysis of zirconium tetra butoxide in ethanol with hydrochloric acid as catalyst. The 5 to 10 mol% of yttrium chloride diluted with ethanol was added to the ethanol suspension of monodispersed zirconia particles. The suspension was ultra-sonicated, and then dried at 78 degrees C. The fibers consisting of monodispersed zirconia particles were obtained by drying as in previous report. The fibers obtained were calcined in air at temperatures between 200 to 1000 degrees C. Although the as-prepared products were amorphous, it was found that they crystallized to stabilized zirconia around 500 degrees C.
