Polystyrene (PS) particles have been used as templates to produce porous silica structures. Silica films were grown on the surface of the PS (diameter: 500 and 1000 nm) by adsorbing fine silica particles, which are synthesized by a hydrolysis of tetraethoxy silicate (TEOS). The size of hydrolyzed silica particles, which was determined by a dynamic light scattering (DLS), was ca. 3 nm. The coated PS spheres were characterized using TEM and SEM. The film reached a maximum film thickness. The coated particles were close-packed by centrifuge. Calcination of the compact yielded a continuous matrix consisting of a well-ordered network. The shape of the pore was hexagonal when the particles of the same size was used, and was nonagonal when the close-packed bodies, which was produced by the coated particles of 500 and 1000 nm, were sintered.
