This paper describes the preparation of a novel layered lanthanum oxide and its intercalation compound with Cs ions at low temperatures, in contrast to the general hexagonal crystal structure of the lanthanum oxide. A lanthanum oxide sol was prepared by the hydrolysis of a lanthanum compound such as lanthanum acetate with H2O and HNO3 in an ethanol solution. The sol was dried to a gel with a rotary evaporator at 80-120°C, followed by firing in air at 400°C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the product showed reflection at 2θ=9.6°, 29° and 39°, which are quite different from that of the hexagonal lanthanum oxide. Images obtained with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed layered shapes. These results indicate that the product is a novel layered lanthanum oxide. The lanthanum oxide intercalated with Cs ions was also prepared from the sol containing Cs ions.
