Continuous oxide-fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites has attrcted great attention recently, since its wide potential application as damage-talerant refractory materials. fiber coating has been applid for improving the toughness of composites. however, the fiber degradation by coating and/or high temperature was observed. in this study, the influence of monazite coating roughness on strength of alumina fiber was examined. the results indicates that both the unsuitable coating precursor properties and high temperarure exposure would cause the increase of coating roughness, and this decreased the alumina fiber strength. in addition, the grain growth in the fiber after exposure at high temperature is suspectured another importent reasion for fiber strength degradation. the detail will be discussed in this paper.
