Nanoporous alumina membranes differing in pore size prepared by anodically oxidizing high purity aluminum in sulfuric acid electrolyte was studied by NMR and ESCA in order to investigate sulfur distribution. It was found that sulfur is mainly present on the surface, and that it affects the coordination state of aluminum.
